The team dives deep into recent transfer rumors, including links to Mark Leonard, while providing a data-driven defense of Celtic’s Player of the Year, Benjamin Nygren, against recent fan criticism. The discussion pivots to the Speedboat League projections, where Alan reveals a tightening race for European spots and the statistical “variance” impacting Hearts and Rangers. Finally, the trio previews the upcoming Glasgow Derby, weighing the tactical shift of Danny Roll’s 4-2-2-2 Red Bull model against Celtic’s potential injury crisis following Maeda’s recent knock.

David Dickinson (“Digger” to his Ibrox pals) missed the Jamie McGrath red card challenge and only awarded a yellow. Douglas Ross was certain Daizen Maeda was offside for the first goal despite being yards behind the play.

Who would have thought having a fan of The Rangers and a Conservative & Unionist Party leader in control could cause issues in such a game? Shocked, I tell ye!

But it was the lack of support from the VAR room (Don Robertson) that has left the Yorkshire Whistler in a state where he “cannot fathom” some of those decisions. Regular readers will know the Yorkshire Whistler is very measured, professional and empathetic to the referee’s perspective.

It has been a hugely successful season for refereeing under Willie Collum in that in general we have moved from Crawford Allan’s patterns of assistance for one club, to a situation whereby all clubs seem to suffer more or less equally from the low-quality refereeing.

Here’s hoping, with the titles and European places still to be decided, we have not regressed on that front.

The Rangers have been hampered by incorrect calls to the tune of -1.73 expected points, and Celtic -1.32 xPts, a difference of 0.41 xPts.

<a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" episode of The Huddle Breakdown, Laura Bradburn returns to join James and Alan for a deep dive into a pulse-pounding weekend of Scottish football. The crew analyzes Celtic’s gritty victory over Hibs, highlighting Alistair Johnston’s vital return and the "variance monster" that defined the match. The conversation then shifts to the explosive title race after Hearts’ dramatic win over Rangers, sparking a debate on whether the current "jeopardy" in the league is a result of elite competition or a regression in quality among the traditional giants. From snooker world championships to NBA upsets and the "chaotic" rise of smaller European clubs like FC Thun, this episode captures a unique moment of sporting unpredictability.

Hibernian 1, Celtic 2 - 3rd May, 2026

More of the same amidst a sprinkling of refereeing mayhem

Alan Morrison

It is analytically limiting to draw conclusions when Celtic face a 10 man opponent for 70 minutes.

That allowed overwhelming control and possession over Hibernian who were content to sit in banks of five and three across their box.

Producing high quality chances was at a premium and it took rare moments of quality to produce the two goals. The hosts dissect the "mini culture war" sparked by the high-scoring PSG vs. Bayern Munich Champions League clash, using it as a springboard to discuss football philosophies and their parallels to Celtic FC. Utilizing the "Speedboat League" and "Imagine League" frameworks, the discussion strips away season-long variance—including penalties, red cards, and "the Crawford Allan factor"—to reveal the underlying performance levels of Celtic, Rangers, and Hearts. The episode concludes with a granular tactical preview of the upcoming "cup final" against Hibernian, analyzing historical home-field advantages under pressure and the impact of potential personnel shifts under Martin O'Neill.

This is inevitable once a player ceases to be mission critical, but on the back of a cameo to set up Kelechi Iheanacho for a game breaking extra time goal at Hampden fresh on the minds, there are also long memories of what Forrest has contributed to Celtic.

Over 100 goals and 100 assists going into what will be his 18 consecutive seasons as a first team player. Famously, he has scored in the previous 17 as well as accruing 26 winners medals, so far. Forrest’s Celtic career has impinged on three decades.

The need for experience and know-how going into what can only be a tumultuous summer transfer window, whilst maintaining the home-grown European quota, is not unwise, especially if, as likely, it is on reduced financial terms.

In short then, it is not a difficult decision to get behind, with the important caveat that he can at best be considered the fourth or fifth choice at the wing attack position.

The hosts analyze Daizen Maeda’s "world-class" performance, supported by record-breaking packing recovery data, while cautioning against the team's low XG (expected goals) and tendency to "hibernate" after taking a lead. Transitioning to squad planning, the discussion critiques the club’s recent contract extensions for players like James Forrest and Liam Scales, questioning the lack of a modern recruitment pathway for an aging squad. Finally, the show wraps with a look at the Scottish Premiership title race, highlighting how variance and "voodoo" luck continue to impact rivals Rangers and Hearts as the season reaches its chaotic conclusion.

Title Race Fine Margins

Post-split week 1

James Dailey

As the title race comes down to just 12 games, 4-each for Hearts, Celtic, and Rangers, results are truly all that matter. Whilst I do have sympathy for the Celtic player here, due to it being accidental and he had virtually no reaction time at all from when the shot is hit, his arm is quite extended outwards. The shot appears to be on target from close range and, if not for hitting Donovan’s arm, looks very likely to a goal bound effort. The duo explores Celtic’s alarming "hibernation" periods—highlighted by a staggering 34-minute stretch without a single shot—and questions if the squad is currently the "worst coached team in the league" despite their progression to a final against Neil Lennon’s Dunfermline. As they look toward the post-split fixtures against Falkirk and Hibs, the discussion shifts to the desperate need for "moments of magic" from high-quality but fitness-compromised stars like Kieran
