With reports that Celtic were close to signing U21 Fulham striker, Callum Osmand, I ran him through the league-based benchmarking exericse.
Some important caveats and details to consider with this specific benchmarking exercise:
The Premier League 2 had an average age of just over 19 years, so Osmand was right around average.
Given the limited amount of games/minutes, I expanded the pool of players to include all players coded as forwards and attacking midfielders. That is important to keep in mind relative to various metrics and his percentile rankings - i.e. strikers in general will not rank highly versus attacking midfielders and wide forwards for ball progression-related metrics, as just one example.
I add Chelsea U21 striker, Donnell McNeilly for comparison purposes given the issues described in #2. McNeilly was also aged 19 and had the highest amount of non-penalty xG per 90 minutes. The highest scoring rate for non-penalty goals per 90 was Tom Watson, a Sunderland U21 player, but he was aged 21 - so “old” for the level.
Sample size is limited for both players, at 1,116 minutes for Osmand and 1,327 for McNeilly.
