In this episode of The Huddle Breakdown, Laura, James, and Alan dissect a truly bizarre Glasgow Derby where Celtic advanced on penalties despite registering zero shots in 120 minutes.
This episode felt very much like the sober morning assessment of the night before. It made clear to me two things that results have tended to camouflage.
When it comes to available players, Sevco are in a much better position to win the league than we are.
More importantly, management at Celtic are not making the best use of our depleted resources. For example, I do not understand how Saracchi would not be 1 of the 17 players used over the 120 minutes.
@James Dailey , I really commend you for taking a shot at trying to understand the social political dynamics going on in Scotland, but trust me it’s not as alien to you as it may appear. There is a direct link between their fans and the Scots Irish in the south of America responsible for Jim Crow all the way up to MAGA culture. In a microcosm, their fans represent settler colonialism and the imperial forces that put them its place and protect them, whilst our fans represent occupied and oppressed, indigenous people of the world. In reality, religion has nothing to do with it, this is a dynamic super imposed by their respective churches. I hope this helps explain what’s going on and gives you way to relate a little bit more. Thank you for all your amazing work in helping us understand what’s happening on the actual field of play!
Thanks Patrick - the alien part to which I tried to reference was the specific manifestation through major sport during my adult lifetime. While nefarious elements obviously still exist amongst individuals, something like an organized racist chant even among a small group at SEC (deep south) college football games would be unprecedented in recent history, for example. There was an incident in 2021 in Omaha at a college baseball game and the cretins were reported to security and dealt with, and both schools involved and media coverage acting as one would expect/hope. Also, to my knowledge more extreme ultra groups just are not a thing in North American sports. Political radicals generally organize via other means.
Totally understood. I guess what I was saying is it’s just different arenas that the same elements are choosing to express themselves in, but the dynamics are sadly global. That said, it is fascinating that football provides an outlet for what was for millennia, tribal warfare. In fact, many clubs have their roots in the military, with Celtic being a very obvious exception, and the Rangers being a perfect example of a club that not only emerged from the military, but maintains its connection with them. Go figure?
Sidenote… I’m in NYC, do you ever come up here to watch games at the CSC, or is there a good club in Philly? Would be great to catch a game one day!
Have not been to NYC for a while but have many times over the years. Philly actually less frequently (two good CSC's there) and mostly to Pittsburgh the past 3+ years with both our kids at University there. Would love to connect when schedules permit- mostly Underwear CSC on my recliner for me! Hoping to get to Glasgow later in the year - possibly September.
I (like many, I guess) disengaged from the former-Twitter as it evolved into the X-rated cesspit it has become, fleeing to BlueSky. Can I ask that you (individually and as a team) consider posting/mirroring stuff on BlueSky. It is a (mostly) civil forum without being merely an echo chamber.
Hi Harry we do post on the Huddle Breakdown account on Blue Sky as well as X. I check comments also, and do respond when people comment from my own account.
Thanks, Alan. Yes, I’ve seen posts there but wondered if perhaps they were less frequent than on X. I used to see James quite frequently on X, can’t recall on BlueSky.
It was horrendously heroic, I swore regularly and with gusto. The playing out from the back (or within 6yd box) was a peculiarity but under this coaching set up, I was not surprised...an ecstatic embarrassment.
Spot on on how anti-irish racism is accepted
Brilliant meditation on the clashes and the society wide and club specific, lets euphemistically call them 'absurdities'. Thanks Alan and Laura.
Nice news about the Sevco financial difficulties, thanks Juco. HH

BTW you are not missing anything! I use X to amuse myself on media behaviour and refereeing and anything else that takes my fancy
Yes that’s fair for my part I’ll respond to folk but don’t post anything outside links to content here.

Some prime Alan Morrison monologue material to cut and disseminate here guys! Bravo👏
Great show, surprised you managed to condense into the time, you could've talked for days on this game! Cheers
