Karamoko Dembele made his debut for Celtic against Heart of Midlothian. He does not replace Jack Aitchison as Celtic’s youngest ever player, but his diminutive frame and more importantly, performance, were nevertheless eye catching.
Dembele appeared for the Celtic U20s when aged 13 for a single substitute appearance. My own thoughts at the time were that this was an unnecessary publicity generating stunt with no real benefit to him as a footballer.
He has been appearing for the Reserves this season and signed a professional contract until 2021 as soon as he was eligible.
He was deemed ready for a first team squad place in the final league game of the season, and came on for Burke at half time to play in an attacking right position.
Dembele Debut by Numbers

Dembele was given a whole half and he managed to complete 17 passes only giving the ball away once. Even that was harsh as it looked as if Ralston may have got to the ball before it went out of play for a goal kick.
By way of comparison, Sinclair on the other flank has 13 passes and gave it away twice in the first half AND second halves.
So, Dembele got himself involved.
Giving only 1 pass away may suggest a young player playing it safe.
But:

He managed 3 shots in 45 minutes. Only Johnston, with 5, managed more shots in the game.
He also got possession in the opposition box 3 times, the same as Sinclair, and 2 times less than Johnston in the second half.
He attempted two take-ons or dribbles, being successful with one.
His Total Impect score of 45 was 10 higher than Sinclair managed in 90 minutes, and 41 more than Burke managed in the first half. Indeed, pro rata, only Ralston’s 105 was higher. (Ralston’s performance was significant as an aside).
Given his slight 5-foot 3-inch frame, he even won possession back once in the opposition defensive third.
Summary
In summary Dembele created danger for the opposition whilst maintaining possession.
His confidence and calmness were impressive.
His ability to run at pace whilst in complete mastery of the ball also a sign of high-end skills.
Of course, we should all be cautious around his development.
But as a debut goes, well done young man.
