The 2025-2026 SPFL Premiership season was much anticipated by The Huddle Breakdown, as competitive tectonic plates shifted violently. The takeover at Rangers, Bloom’s investment at Hearts, and risks Celtic faced had us geared up for potential major shifts. The terrific stories unfolding at Falkirk (somewhat expected) and Motherwell (uhh…yeah we blew that one!) have added a lot to the league intrigue so far.

It truly has been an interesting league to cover and analyze so far this season, with the trials and travails at Celtic one of many storylines.

As I continue to explore various topics as to what has actually changed this season, some things jumped out for this week’s column.

The first of MANY graphics this week compared the number of possessions and fouls per game for each Premiership team starting with the 2018-2019 season. I added a simple linear regression line which suggested some statistical correlation between the two variables.

I would argue that makes common sense, as higher turnovers in possession logically present more situations where fouls are more likely to be committed. We saw the Dundee United side from 2020-2021 and Celtic from 2024-2025 were two relative outliers within this sample.

The second graphic added the 2025-2026 season-to-date to the same data from the first, where we saw how crazy the entire league has apparently gone - CHAOS BALL!!!
