There are only nine occasions a Celtic player has achieved 20% or more conversion rate from all shots since my records started in 2014-15.
On two of those occasions, the player was Kyogo Furuhashi and three of those occasions were last season.
Here are the times a 20% all-shot conversion rate has been achieved (midfielders and forwards playing over 900 minutes):

Note that Aaron Mooy is the only midfielder on the list and that five out of the nine occasions have been under Ange Postecoglou.
Therefore, there is a little bit (a lot?) of system over individual going on here. In that under the Australian, the attacking patterns were geared towards getting the ball into central areas in the box, preferably low and hard, where a striker whose skill sets were designed to finish such chances was present. The backup striker Giorgos Giakoumakis is also on 30% conversion.
More proof that the system was instrumental?
Neither Daizen Maeda nor Furuhashi are anywhere near that rate of conversion this season under a new manager.
Furuhashi’s has halved to 15% and Maeda’s a paltry 9%!
There are many factors including quality of service, performance of opposition goalkeepers, and luck.
Before Postecoglou, anyone achieving 20% all-shot conversion rate was a standout. This season only David Turnbull is close with 19%.
Celtic can, therefore, be successful without anyone hitting the 30% mark. Which is just as well.
But it sure is heart warming to see system and recruitment in harmony for once!
More on this in the Celtic Way tomorrow.
