Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, and Dermot Desmond…no this is not some weirdo riddle. Well, maybe it is.
Ms. Winfrey recounted part of a prior conversation she had had with Ms. Angelou during a 2011 interview of Ms. Winfrey.
Here was how she paraphrased Ms. Angelou:
"My dear, when people show you who they are, why don't you believe them? Why must you be shown 29 times before you can see who they really are? Why can't you get it the first time?"
I thought of this idea, which has colloquially been attributed to Ms. Angelou as simply believing people when they tell you who they are, when I recently revisited an interview Dermot Desmond had with The Athletic in late summer 2020. My anecdotal sense from reading and listening to a lot of Celtic fan media, as well as various other forms of online dialogue amongst the support, has been frustration and confusion as to why the club has hoarded so much cash, especially given what seems to be a manager who thinks the squad lacks quality and depth.
